Why we say it

We thank Hashem for returning our soul — for the gift of another day of life.

Every morning is a gift. Before your feet touch the ground, before you check your phone, before anything — you say "thank you." This prayer is your first conversation with God each day.

Modeh ani l'fanecha

I give thanks before You

מוֹדֶה = I give thanks. אֲנִי = I. לְפָנֶיךָ = before You.

מֶלֶךְ חַי וְקַיָּם

Melech chai v'kayam

Living and eternal King

מֶלֶךְ = King. חַי = living. וְקַיָּם = and enduring/eternal.

שֶׁהֶחֱזַרְתָּ בִּי נִשְׁמָתִי

She'hechezarta bi nishmati

For You have returned my soul within me

שֶׁהֶחֱזַרְתָּ = that You returned. בִּי = within me. נִשְׁמָתִי = my soul.

בְּחֶמְלָה רַבָּה אֱמוּנָתֶךָ

B'chemla raba emunatecha

With compassion — great is Your faithfulness

בְּחֶמְלָה = with compassion. רַבָּה = great/abundant. אֱמוּנָתֶךָ = Your faithfulness.
